Maré

Maré (Tide) is a project by a Brazilian dance group. In this performance, Dançaberta portrays the lived experience of a woman who works on the beach and is permeated by a range of emotions. The piece is deeply inspired by the book Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh and explores not only the beauty of the beach and the ocean, but also their darker side: the unknown, strange creatures, waste, dehumanization, pain, the passage of time and its traces. All of these elements come together to create a sensory, poetic narrative that is, at the same time, raw and real.

To develop the visual identity of the performance, it was essential to engage in dialogue with the group, to understand what motivated them, what the piece awakened in each member, and which emotions emerged from the work. It became clear that time was a central element in Echoes of the Sea, as well as what happens through its passage: how materials transform and how the protagonist changes.

Another key aspect was horizontality: the strip of sand, the breaking waves, and finally, the sea. The contrast between surface and depth, between what is visible and what is hidden, also emerged, along with the tension between the human and the dehumanized. The duality between beauty and the unknown was embraced as a core visual axis.

The identity was built through layers of collage that evoke the passage of time, combined with archival imagery. Warm and cool colors were used to convey the contrasting sensations the sea can provoke: calm and threat, connection and solitude, contemplation and pain. Textures reference both the natural elements of the beach and what time leaves behind, waste, traces, memory. And, of course, elements that evoke femininity are present: the shell, the flower, and the female figure, expressed in both strength and fragility.
